Us mental health professionals are interested in why we behave in the ways we do. When it comes to socially and culturally unacceptable behavior, we ask ourselves "OK...what happened to this person that caused them to behave in this way?" Sometimes it's a mental illness caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Sometimes it's because of things done to them as young children that has altered how their mind works in a "negative", socially unacceptable way. That so many children are treated in despicable ways is a collective responsibility.
